Science

Intent

Our Science Curriculum aims to excite, inspire and stimulate children’s curiosity about the world around them. Pupils will develop their scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through a broad and balanced curriculum.

We intend to do this by:

  • Teaching stimulating and interesting lessons
  • Teaching pupils knowledge, methods, processes and uses of Science through the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics
  • Using the scientific enquiry skills to help pupils answer and explore scientific questions/lines of enquiry
  • Develop and support pupils awareness and understanding of scientific vocabulary through rich class discussions
  • Plan and teach lessons which enable pupils to work scientifically
  • Ensure pupils develop a love for Science and understand the uses and implications for Science today and in the future

Implementation

Long, medium and short term planning is progressive across the year groups. Teachers plan and teach lessons which are based on the enquiry approach. Lessons provide pupils with lots of opportunities to develop their scientific spoken language.

  • All teachers plan lessons that are investigative
  • All teachers have an up to date Science display which is rich in vocabulary
  • All teachers explicitly use and refer to scientific vocabulary and terminology when teaching
  • All teachers include the working scientifically statement in planning and learning objectives
  • All teachers follow the national curriculum scheme which is progressive

Impact

  • Pupils have science subject knowledge
  • Pupils use correct scientific terminology
  • Pupils can work scientifically
  • Pupils can plan and carry out experiments
